Sex Education Laws in the States By Kyle Zinth
There are many different laws pertaining to sex education within schools among the United States and also Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The laws address teaching information on AIDS, Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDS) and abstinance in the cirriculum of sex education. In Zinth's article he provides an explination of what each State is required to teach their students and what their policies are on sex eduation. The state of Rhode Island has an AIDS Education program in which schools are required to provide their students with information on HIV and AIDS including transmisson and prevention adressing that abstinance is the preffered option for preventing AIDS. If a student 18 years or older, or with consent of a parent or legal guardian can request with a written letter to the principal to be exempt from the lesson. Rhode Island General laws 16-22-18 states that every secondary school teaches about health and family life including instruction on abstinance being the preferred method of preventing STDS and pregnancy. The same goes as above with rules on being exempt. The state of Rhode Island also authorizes the directors of health services to provide educational programs to inform the community of child health planning areas in the state. There are a list of all the states in this article explaining their views, like Rhode Island's on what is to be done about sex education.
This was helpful because I got an understanding of what is required to be taught to students in each state in our country. Many of the states aknowledge the requirement to teach AIDS, abstinance and information about STDS and pregnancy. I was surprised to look at the chart and find that some states had no laws on what is being taught through sex education.
